What Are The Reasons To Invest In A Talalay Latex Mattress?

  1. Talalay Latex offers “bottomless” pressure relief for your body. Whether you are on your back or side, you will have less pressure on more inches of Talalay latex. Did you know when you lay on your side, your shoulders and hips have 7 times more pressure on them than when you lay on your back? Pressure relief is important to your muscles and it keeps the blood flowing to your extremities so you don’t have numb fingers, hands and arms. But more importantly, your body responds to pressure by moving during the night which will likely lessen the quality of your sleep.
  2. Talalay Latex offers “uplifting” support for your body. Your body needs support. It needs it for ideal body alignment and ideal spinal alignment. The benefit of good support is good posture. We love the phrase, better posture at night equals better posture during the day. Talalay latex offers an effect that is not found with traditional bedding materials. Talalay latex is uplifting and it is also pressure relieving. All other materials in a mattress are either one or the other, but not both. Most people think they need a firm bed, but that is only partially true. They need a bed with strong support, but they also need a bed that offers pressure relief on top of that. Firm on the bottom and soft on top is probably a more ideal formula.
  3. Talalay Latex offers a “resilient” natural rubber construction. Most people want a mattress to last a long time. It is a big investment. Simply put, you can buy an $1,000 mattress three times over the years or you can buy one $3,000 mattress and have it last 15 years. Talalay latex is incredibly resilient. The easiest way to understand that Talalay latex lasts longer is to understand that Talalay latex is a rubber not a poly foam. Rubber is more resilient. It’s the nature of the material.

The Talalay Advantage

Do you know what’s inside your mattress? When you have a Talalay latex mattress, the answer is simple; 100% Talalay latex. Every Talalay latex mattress starts out as a tree. We harvest the liquid latex from the tropical Hevea brasiliensis tree and turn it into the finest mattresses, using eco-friendly production methods at our manufacturing facility in Shelton, CT.

Talalay latex mattresses are more breathable, resilient and offer unmatched support and pressure relief; the key elements to getting the best night’s sleep you have ever had! You never have to compromise comfort because we offer a full spectrum of “feels” from firm to ultra-plush. Each bed is made by hand and put through rigorous quality testing before it enters your bedroom.

Invest in quality. Invest in the environment. Choose Talalay.

6 Reasons to Choose Talalay Latex

It’s Healthy
Our Talalay latex is Oeko-Tex certified as Class I, the highest rating possible. This certification verifies our products are free from harmful substances and is even safe for babies. Very few latex or foam producers in the world meet the standards of this independent, third-party certification. Even our adhesives are water-based and free of solvents.

It’s Breathable
Mattresses and pillows made of Talalay latex breathe up to seven times better than other types of latex or foam products, allowing for cooler sleep. The materials in most mattresses and pillows don’t allow body heat to dissipate, which can interrupt your sleep, but Talalay latex has a breathable design and cell structure that creates a temperature neutral environment.

It’s Hypoallergenic
Talalay latex is ideal for people with allergies and asthma. It is naturally mold, mildew and dust mite resistant and is inherently antibacterial and antifungal.

It’s Environmentally Friendly
The Talalay process features natural, biodegradable ingredients that come from renewable resources and water-based raw materials: natural latex, air and water. The rubber trees are not harmed in the latex harvesting process. In fact, they are productive for 25 years, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and helping to reduce greenhouse gases. We are also mindful of our energy and water consumption during the manufacturing process. Our manufacturing automation optimizes energy usage for the molding stage and our state of the art factory features energy efficient lighting. Our multi-stage washer has been engineered so it minimizes the amount of water consumed without reducing the quality of the finished product.

It’s Made in the USA
Our manufacturing facility is based in Shelton, CT, USA.

It Doesn’t Off-Gas
Talalay doesn’t off-gas like synthetic foam or polyurethane. You may notice the “new bed smell” of the latex when it first

Talalay vs. Dunlop

Not all latex is created equal. Talalay and Dunlop are the two processes used in mattress production. The Dunlop process was developed in 1929 and was the first method used to produce latex material for bedding.  As technology progressed, the Talalay process was developed by the Talalay family during World War II. The Talalay process is significantly more complex and costly, but produces softer, more buoyant and luxurious finished products.  So why is there such a difference? The Talalay process takes four times longer than Dunlop with two additional process steps—vacuum and flash freezing—which improve the consistency, quality and feel of the finished latex.

The vacuum evenly distributes the latex throughout the mold, allowing us to create precise and varied feels in the finished Talalay latex. A mattress is made more firm or plush based on how much latex is poured into the mold. With the Dunlop process there is little ability to vary the feel of the finished product because the liquid latex is poured onto a conveyor belt resulting in a dense piece of latex every time. The only way to soften the feel of Dunlop latex is to add “fillers” into the liquid latex formula, which can result in solid latex that is flaky and breaks down quickly.  The flash freezing step gives Talalay its consistent feel. Liquid latex is a suspension of rubber particles in water, like a shaken snow globe. Flash freezing prevents the latex particles from settling to the bottom while gelling into a solid product. This means that the resulting piece of solid Talalay latex has the same consistent feel from top to bottom, and side to side. The Dunlop process doesn’t utilize a freeze step. Therefore, the rubber particles settle to the bottom while the liquid latex is gelling into a solid form, resulting in a variation of feel from top to bottom.  Think of Talalay latex like a chocolate soufflé; although the process is long, the end product is a buoyant, airy, complex delight. Dunlop latex is more like a pound cake; tasty, but dense and flat in comparison.

Latex Processes - Process Type Details

TALALAY

  1. Liquid Latex formulation is poured into a mold and sealed closed
  2. Vacuum is created to disperse liquid Latex throughout mold
  3. Liquid Latex is flash frozen
  4. Frozen Latex is flash heated to "gel" into permanent solid form
  5. Cooled solid Latex is removed from mold

DUNLOP

  1. Liquid Latex formulation is poured onto a long conveyor belt
  2. Liquid Latex is slowly heated to "gel" into permanent solid form
  3. Cooled solid Latex is removed from conveyor belt

Critical Additional Processing Steps for TALALAY

Step#2: VACUUM

Step#3: FLASH FREEZE

Step#2: VACUUM; This allows any amount of Latex to be evenly distributed throughout the mold creating precise and varied firmness with the finished Latex. The more liquid Latex thatand poured into the mold the firmer the resulting solid Latex. Therefore, if less liquid Latex is used, a softer more supple piece of Latex results.

This differs from Dunlop in that Dunlop process has very little ability to vary the firmness or feel of the finished solid product while maintaining its structural integrity. The liquid formula is poured onto a belt and you get the same, dense piece of Latex every time. The only way to soften the feel of Dunlop Latex is to add "fillers" into the liquid Latex formula which results in solid Latex that is flaky and breaks down quickly.
Step#3: FLASH FREEZE; This provides TALALAY with its uniquely consistent characteristic. Liquid Latex is a suspension of rubber particles in water, like a shaken snow globe. Flash freezing prevents the Latex particles from settling to the bottom while gelling into a solid product. This means that the resulting piece of solid TALALAY Latex has the same consistent feel from top to bottom.

This differs from Dunlop because Dunlop process does not utilize a freeze step. Therefore, the rubber particles settle to the bottom while the liquid Latex is gelling into a solid form, like a snow globe, resulting in a variation of feel from top to bottom. This is not recognizable if the Dunlop Latex is used as a bottom layer of a mattress but can cause problems if Dunlop pieces are used for pillows or as top layers of a mattress.
CONCLUSION - The TALALAY process takes four times longer than Dunlop with two additional process steps that improve the consistency, quality and feel of the finished Latex.

A simple analogy: TALALAY Latex is like a chocolate souffl#233;; although the process is long, your end product is a buoyant, airy, complex delight. Dunlop Latex is more like a tray of brownies; tasty, but dense and flat in comparison.

How Is Talalay Latex Different Than Dunlop Latex?

Even though they’re both latex, there are significant differences between our Talalay latex and Dunlop latex. They’re manufactured using different processes; it takes 14 hours to make a Talalay latex mattress core, but less than one hour to make a Dunlop mattress core.

But the most important differences are benefits to you. Here are six ways Talalay latex better serves you:

  1. Breathability
Talalay latex is FOUR TIMES more breathable than Dunlop Process latex. Why? Talalay latex is aerated and has a large cell structure. Dunlop latex is denser latex and has a small cell structure.
  2. Pressure Relief
Talalay latex is 33% more pressure relieving than Dunlop latex. Why? The vacuum process used in making Talalay latex allows for the latex to stretch like a rubber band so it conforms to your body. Dunlop latex is a poured process that creates latex which is less flexible. The rubber is more like the rubber in an eraser.
  3. Durability
Talalay latex is THREE TIMES more resilient than Dunlop latex. Why? The Talalay latex process creates a round cell structure. As the latex is compressed, a round cell structure does not break itself down. The Dunlop Process creates a snowflake cell structure. As you might imagine, as you compress a snowflake cell structure, the material breaks down.
  4. Consistency
Talalay latex is the same feel from top to bottom and consistent from side to side. Dunlop process latex is softer on top and firmer on the bottom. Why? The Talalay process uses flash freezing that prevents the particles from settling after curing. Because there is no freezing in the Dunlop process, particles setting in the latex during curing creating firmness on the bottom.
  5. Clean
Talalay latex can wash out more proteins (which is a primary cause of latex allergies) than Dunlop latex. Why? The Talalay latex process uses a five-stage fresh water rinse process.
  6. Support
Talalay latex provides not only pressure relief, but also support. Why? Talalay latex is a two dimensional material. It offers support and pressure relief. Dunlop Process latex is a one-dimensional material. It primarily offers pressure relief similar to foam.

What is The Difference Between Talalay Latex And Memory Foam?

Both Talalay latex and Memory Foam are marketed as the premium mattress materials, but they are very different.

Talalay latex is a rubber. Memory Foam is a foam, which doesn’t provide both support and pressure relief.

Talalay latex rubber is a natural material derived from the rubber tree. Memory foam is a synthetic material and is a petroleum-based product.

Talalay latex rubber has a breathable design and cell structure that provides a temperature neutral environment. Memory foam is a dense material, which needs heat to activate its pressure relieving quality. It usually sleeps warmer.

You “sleep on” Talalay latex rubber and it has an uplifting effect. You “sleep in” memory foam which provides a “sinking” effect.

Talalay latex rubber is two dimensional material. It is both supportive by being uplifting and is also pressure relieving. Most memory foam mattresses use memory foam in the pressure relief layer and traditional poly foam in the support layer.

Talalay latex rubber is “bottomless.” Even when you lay on your side, your body does not “bottom out” into a hard layer in the mattress or on the foundation. Memory foam allows you to bottom out onto what is underneath it.

Talalay latex rubber is a fast response material. When you move, it immediately responds to your new position. Memory foam is a slow response material.

Talalay latex rubber is hypoallergenic and does not off-gas. Memory foam is a petroleum-based product.

Talalay latex rubber is extremely durable. Because it is vulcanized, it is the most resilient material available in a mattress.

Talalay latex rubber is inherently antibacterial and antifungal.

How Is Talalay Latex Better For My Health?

The difference is in the chemicals. Many mattress adhesives contain a variety of toxic chemicals. Solvent-based mattress adhesives are filled with 48 toxic chemicals and foam has an additional 7. A Talalay latex mattress is just that, 100% Talalay. Our beds are made with water-based adhesives and contain 6 non-toxic chemicals (acrylate resins, diphenyl diisocyanate, Phenol-melamine resins, Phenol-urea, Polyvinyl acetate and waxes styrene- butadiene copolymer) and 3 natural materials (fats, hevea brasiliensis milk, and water.)

You spend about 1/3 of your year in bed, so it’s important to know what you’re sleeping on.

Latex INTL - How Latex is Made

The Talalay Global Latex Foam Company

Founded over 35 years ago, Talalay Global is the largest producer of Talalay in the world and the only manufacturer in the United States. Our Talalay is used in millions of the finest mattresses, pillows and toppers around the globe.

Talalay Global was literally started in the basement of a local VFW in Connecticut by two friends who worked together and lost their jobs following a devastating factory fire. With grit, determination, and a lot of support from their families and community, their facility soon grew to 15,000 square feet and produced its first latex pillow within two years. After 18 years of success, the company reinvested and rebuilt the worlds’ finest, state-of-the-art facility in Shelton, Connecticut where all of our Talalay is produced today.

Talalay Global is based on a very simple concept. Make Talalay latex products that provide the best sleep experience in the world. Every one of our employees know that they are changing lives, one story at a time. Every day, our company philosophy is supported by our actions. We are driven by high quality standards and we stand behind every product we produce; we never settle for anything less than the best.

Once you have slept on a Talalay latex mattress, you won’t have to take our word for how superior the product is. You will forever be a believer because it will be the most uplifting sleep experience you have ever had!

“Our entire organization has been designed to foster ingenuity and creativity from initial product development to finished product and partner support. We are leading the advancement of Talalay latex bedding products through the development of innovative Talalay Global formulations, product designs and partner training. Talalay Global puts the power of transparent information in the hands of consumers so they can make informed purchasing decisions. Helping people understand the many differences within the Talalay latex world, from cost and quality to sleep benefits, will clarify the “muddy” waters of available latex information and allow consumers to make their best decisions for themselves.”

Latex Mattresses

All of our TALALAY products are made with Natural TALALAY Latex Rubber, which starts as sap from the Havea brasiliensis tree. These rubber trees have a 25 year productive life and a strong positive effect on the environment as they quickly absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and help reduce greenhouse emissions.

Our TALALAY process features natural, biodegradable ingredients that come from renewable resources and water-based raw materials: natural Latex, air, and water. Our process does not use solvents and does not damage the ozone layer. Our clean and green approach carries through to our end products: TALALAY Latex contains no toxic chemicals while standard Poly Foam and Memory Foam (visco) can contain as many as seven toxic chemicals.*

OEKO-TEX CERTIFIED

The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 (link to oeko website) is the leading global testing and certification process that ensures textile materials and home furnishing products do not contain harmful substances or pose a health risk to consumers. Very few Latex or foam producers in the world meet the standards of this independent, third-party certification.

All Latex International TALALAY Latex products are certified OEKO-TEX Class 100; the healthiest classification.

This means that our products do not contain allergenic materials that form carcinogenic arylamines of the MAK-groups III A1 and III A2 (see the Oeko-Tex website for a list of chemicals included in these groups, link to oeko), pesticides and chlorinated phenoles, heavy metals or formaldehyde. Our TALALAY also meets the standard for skin friendly pH and is free from chloro-organic carriers and biologically active finishes.

In other words, Latex International TALALAY is the healthiest material you can sleep on!

PRESSURE MAPPING

Latex International (LI) TALALAY Latex provides 33% more Pressure Relief than leading Memory foam.

Pressure mapping tests the amount of pressure your body registers on a selected surface. This technology is widely used throughout the bedding industry to determine the quantity of pressure that a mattress or pillow creates on your body.

Pressure from your mattress and/or pillow prevents your muscles from relaxing which makes it difficult to fall asleep and impairs circulation causing you to toss - turn which makes it difficult to stay asleep.

Therefore, the less pressure your mattress and pillow produce on your body the easier it is to fall asleep and the more complete sleep you achieve throughout the night which leads to more energetic and productive days.

DURABILITY

TALALAY GLOBAL Latex is 4x more durable than other Latex and 20x more durable than traditional bedding foams.

At TALALAY GLOBAL, they continually ensure that our formulas will last the test of time. Using the standardized ASTM Cornell Indentation test we prove that our TALALAY outlasts any other material used for bedding today.

This is the most rigorous and material damaging ASTM standardized test that exists for bedding components. While Latex International TALALAY performs flawlessly over a period of 12 hours representing decades of use, other Latex's break down much more quickly and foams such as memory foam and polyurethane foam actually tear apart within minutes.

The strength of our material allows TALALAY GLOBAL to offer a 20-Year warranty THAT DOES NOT HAVE THAT 1.5" DISCLAIMER!

BREATHABILITY

Latex International TALALAY Latex breathes up to 7x better than other Latex or foams for cooler sleep.

One of the fastest growing concerns with bedding today is sleeping hot. This is a legitimate concern because not only is it uncomfortable, sleeping too hot interrupts the quality of our sleep as we continuously move to find a cooler spot. This can occur from both mattresses and pillows.

The heightened awareness of sleeping hot is primarily due to increased use of Memory Foam in mattresses. Memory Foam has a collapsible cell structure that traps body heat and radiates it back at us resulting in uncomfortable perspiration.

TALALAY Latex is sometimes confused with Memory Foam because of extensive Memory Foam advertising. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The TALALAY Latex rubber cell structure resists collapsing and allows air to circulate. This breathability whisks away our body heat preventing mattresses and pillows from becoming an oven.

Latex International has gone one step further and developed TALALAY GL which is a unique formulation of TALALAY Latex with special phase change properties. TALALAY GL actually helps regulate the consistency of body temperature for a temperature neutral sleeping experience.

BEDDING ALLERGENS

- Mold, Mildew, Bacteria - Dust Mites

- LI TALALAY Latex is Mold, Mildew - Bacteria proof and Dust Mite resistant

Most people don't consider their mattress as a contributing source for respiratory problems and allergic reactions. We think of our bed as a "safe haven". The reality can be much more yucky.

Mold, mildew, bacteria and dust mites love our beds - pillows. We shed millions of microscopic skin cells and perspire nearly 1 pint of water every night. The microscopic skin cells and water vapor fall through the weave of our linens and mattress cover landing on the cushioning layers below where they become a food and water source for mold, mildew, bacteria and dust mites - it can't be avoided, and it's gross.

Whether your "landing pad" cushion layer is hospitable to these infestations is the controlling factor to the amount of hazardous dust created from your mattress - pillow.

Foams such as Memory Foam - Polyurethane Foam are environments where these contaminants thrive, so if they compose the top cushion layers of your mattress you may have a problem.

Independent testing shows that Latex International TALALAY Latex is mold, mildew - bacteria proof- these organisms simply won't grow on it. Furthermore, itand dust mite resistant so these critters will prefer to be elsewhere, not right next to your face as you sleep.

TOXIN FREE

Try to find a healthier bedding material, we dare you.

In a perfect world all bedding products would be as safe as Latex International's TALALAY Latex. The reality is that todayand technology for producing foams like Memory Foam or Polyurethane Foam simply aren't.

Todayand foams may contain any or all of the following, each are known carcinogens.
Latex International TALALAY Latex contains none of these.

Latex ALLERGENS

Zero cases of allergic reactions to LI products have been reported.

Latex International has been making TALALAY pillows and mattress components for over 35 years. Every year millions of products are sold using Latex International TALALAY.

The FDA tracks allergic reactions to Latex products in the USA. Not once has there been a report of an allergic reaction attributed to any of our TALALAY products.

CONSISTENCY TESTING: MATTRESSES

Talalay Global is the only Latex producer that tests every block of mattress material in 9 separate areas to insure consistency throughout each piece. This means that retailers and consumers can be sure that products delivered or brought home will match the products experienced in the showroom every single time.

Because pillows are not able to be measured in the same way as block mattress material, we electronically weigh and then hand inspect every pillow for quality and consistency. This is an extra time consuming step in our process, but it is the only way to be completely sure that consumers receive the very highest quality pillows every single time.
